What does tsuri goshi mean?
Tsuri Goshi (釣腰) is classified by the Kodokan as koshi-waza, a hip technique. On the judoinfo.com list of Japanese judo terms, koshi means hip. The Gokyo no Waza listed on judoinfo.com places it in Sankyo, the third group, so it is one of the 40 judo throws of the traditional syllabus.
How do you do tsuri goshi?
The Kodokan defines tsuri goshi as a technique to load the opponent onto the back of the hip and throw him down by breaking his balance forward and grabbing the back of his belt to lift it up. The steps follow that definition, right-handed as the Kodokan writes it; mirror them for the left.
- Break the balance forward.
- Reach over or under their arm and grab the back of their belt.
- Lift the belt up as you turn in, loading them onto the back of your hip.
- Throw them down over the hip.
Learn it with a coach and a partner who can breakfall, on a proper mat, and build speed only once the steps are clean.

What is the difference between tsuri goshi and tsurikomi goshi?
Both load your partner onto the back of the hip. The Kodokan's tsurikomi goshi lifts with the right hand on the left front lapel; tsuri goshi lifts with a grip on the back of the belt.
Is tsuri goshi legal in judo competition?
Yes. The IJF Sport and Organisation Rules score a throw only when it is a Kodokan classified technique or a recognised variation, and tsuri goshi is on the Kodokan list, so a clean tsuri goshi can score yuko, waza-ari or ippon.
The IJF rules name tsuri goshi among the throws where diving forward head first onto the mat is hansoku-make.
In BJJ a throw counts as a takedown: 2 points under the IBJJF rules once your partner lands on the back, side or seat and you hold the top for three seconds.
