What to give someone who just started

The white belt is where the most people quit, and almost none of it is about talent. It is about the gap between how hard it feels and how little visible progress there is. So the best gift is not gear that implies they should already be good. It is something that says the people around them expect them to still be here next year.

Stickers are the easiest place to start. They cost little, they need no size, and they end up on the water bottle and the laptop that go to every session. The BJJ stickers shelf has the full range.

If they have started taking notes after class, a journal is the gift that pays off later. Writing down one thing that worked and one thing that did not turns a blur of rolls into something they can look back at. Both options live in BJJ training journals.

For clothing, keep it off the mat. Training happens in a gi, so a tee is for the drive home and the coffee after. Everything else in the range is in BJJ gifts and the wider BJJ apparel and gear department.

Frequently asked questions

How long does someone stay a white belt?

It varies a lot by academy and by how often they train. Ask their coach rather than guessing, and avoid gifts that assume a promotion is close.

Is a gi a good gift for a beginner?

Only if you know their size and their academy's rules on colour and patches. A sticker, a journal or a tee carries none of that risk.

What if they also train Judo?

Then look at grappling gifts, which covers designs that read the same on both mats.
