Tsurikomi Goshi (Lifting Pulling Hip Throw)

Tsurikomi goshi (釣込腰) is the judo lifting pulling hip throw: you lift your partner with the lapel hand and load them onto your hip.

  • Japanese name: tsurikomi goshi, 釣込腰. On the judoinfo.com list of Japanese judo terms, tsurite is the lifting hand and koshi means hip.
  • Kodokan classification: koshi-waza, a hip technique. The Gokyo no Waza listed on judoinfo.com places it in Dai Nikyo, the second group.
  • In judo: shorter players like it because the hip gets deep under a taller partner while the lapel hand keeps them upright and lifted.

What is tsurikomi goshi in judo?

The Kodokan defines tsurikomi goshi as a technique to load the opponent onto the back of the hip and throw him down by breaking his balance forward while gripping his left front-lapel with the right hand and lifting it up.

O goshi puts the arm around the waist; tsurikomi goshi keeps the lapel grip and lifts with it, elbow high, so the partner is drawn up and over the hip. Sode tsurikomi goshi does the same with a grip on the sleeve.

How do you do tsurikomi goshi?

Right-handed, as the Kodokan describes it; mirror for the left.

  1. Break the balance forward. Pull the sleeve with your left hand and lift the left lapel with your right hand, so their weight comes onto their toes and their posture rises.
  2. Step in and turn. Place your right foot in front of their right foot, pivot and bring your left foot back so you face the same way they do, knees bent and hips lower than theirs.
  3. Lift the lapel. Drive the right elbow up and forward so the lapel hand lifts their upper body; your forearm sits under their armpit or across their chest.
  4. Load onto the back of the hip. Push your hips across in front of them and keep both hands lifting and pulling so their body comes onto your lower back.
  5. Throw. Straighten the legs, bend forward and rotate, pulling the sleeve down toward the mat so they roll over the hip and land on their back.

The most common mistake is letting the lifting elbow drop. Once the elbow falls, the lapel hand stops lifting, the partner settles back onto their heels and the hip entry hits a wall. Keep the elbow high through the turn, hips deep, then lift with the legs. Our judo training gear is rash guards made for people who train; wear one under the gi on drilling days.

Is tsurikomi goshi legal in judo competition?

Yes. The IJF Sport and Organisation Rules score a throw when it is a Kodokan classified technique or a recognised variation, and tsurikomi goshi is one, so a clean throw can score yuko, waza-ari or ippon.

In BJJ a throw counts as a takedown: 2 points under the IBJJF rules once your partner lands on the back, side or seat and you hold the top for three seconds.
