Z-Guard (Knee Shield)

Z-guard, or knee shield, is the half guard where your inside shin lies across your partner's chest or hip and your outside leg traps their leg. Seen from above your legs make a Z, and the shin is a shield that holds their weight off you.

  • In BJJ: the safest half guard for a smaller player, because the shin manages distance even when the underhook is lost.
  • Attacks: the kimura, the triangle choke, the scissor-style sweep and the transition to butterfly or deep half.
  • The shield has two heights: knee on the hip to manage distance, knee under the chin to break posture and attack.

What is Z-guard?

You are on your side in half guard. Your bottom leg hooks their trapped leg from the outside, as in any half guard. Your top knee comes up and across their body, shin against their chest or hip, with your foot hooked around their far side so the leg cannot be pushed to the mat. Your top arm frames on their shoulder or neck, your bottom arm posts or grips a sleeve.

The knee shield is a frame with a leg instead of an arm, so it holds a lot more weight than your arms ever could. That is why it is the first half guard most coaches teach.

How do you play Z-guard?

  1. Get on your side with one of their legs trapped between yours, outside foot hooked over their calf.
  2. Bring your top knee across their body, shin on the chest or the hip, with the foot hooked around their far side.
  3. Frame with your top arm on their shoulder or collar and keep your bottom elbow tight, so they cannot crossface you.
  4. Keep your hips angled away from them, so the shield pushes them off and their weight falls past you.
  5. Attack when they push the shield: swing to the kimura when they reach, go to butterfly when they lean back, or dive to deep half when they stand.

The most common mistake is a flat knee shield, with your back on the mat and the knee pointing at the ceiling. That shield is easy to push down and pass over. Stay on your side and point the knee at their chin.

What does the IBJJF say about the Z-guard?

The IBJJF Rules Book treats it as a half guard: one of the top player's legs is trapped to block side control or north-south. Passing it to side control or north-south for three seconds scores 3 points; a reversal held for three seconds scores the 2-point sweep.

How do you look after your knees in Z-guard?

The shield puts your knee between you and a lot of pressure, so let it go rather than letting it bend sideways under a hard smash pass. Our BJJ training gear has the kit for careful rounds.
