Lineage

Lineage is the chain of instructors that links a BJJ black belt back through their teacher's teachers, usually to the Gracie brothers and Mitsuyo Maeda. It is how the sport records who learned from whom.

  • Format: written as a chain of names, oldest first. Bjjheroes.com gives Royce Gracie's as Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Royce Gracie.
  • Other sourced examples: Carlos Gracie, Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie; Roger Gracie, Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Carlos Gracie Junior > Roger Gracie.
  • In judo: lineage matters less, because the Kodokan and national federations hold the grading records.

What does lineage mean?

Every BJJ black belt was promoted by a specific person, who was promoted by a specific person, and so on back. Bjjheroes.com lists this chain at the top of each fighter profile. The Royce Gracie page gives Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Royce Gracie. The Carlos Gracie page gives the shortest possible line, Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie. The Roger Gracie page shows a branch of the same tree: Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Carlos Gracie Junior > Roger Gracie.

Your own lineage is your instructor's lineage with your name on the end.

Why do grapplers care about lineage?

  1. It verifies a belt. A black belt with no traceable lineage raises questions; one with a known chain answers them.
  2. It explains a style. Lineages carry preferences for certain guards, passes and finishes.
  3. It builds loyalty. Team affiliations, patches and tournament brackets all follow lineage lines.
  4. It is a form of respect for the people who did the teaching.
  5. It connects the beginner at a weekend class to the founding generation in a few steps.

How does the IBJJF record lineage?

Through who signs the promotion. The IBJJF General System of Graduation requires a black belt promotion to be signed by a black belt professor with at least two degrees certified by the IBJJF.

How do you use the idea of lineage?

Know your own lineage and be able to say it. Ask your instructor who promoted them and who promoted that person; most are glad to be asked. Treat lineage as a record. A short line to a famous name and a long line to a quiet one both certify the same thing. What the chain guarantees is that someone qualified watched you earn every belt.

The people in your chain are the ones who deserve the thank-you. Our BJJ gifts collection is for them.
