What does harai tsurikomi ashi mean?
Harai Tsurikomi Ashi (払釣込足) is classified by the Kodokan as ashi-waza, a foot technique. The judoinfo.com ashi-waza list gives its English name as Lifting Pulling Foot Sweep. How do you do harai tsurikomi ashi?
The Kodokan defines harai tsurikomi ashi as a technique to sweep up the opponent's ankle with the left foot from the front and throw him down by breaking his balance while lifting him up forward. The steps follow that definition, right-handed as the Kodokan writes it; mirror them for the left.
- Break the balance by lifting your partner up and forward with your hands.
- Sweep their ankle with your left foot from the front.
- Keep lifting and pulling as the foot goes, so they fall forward over the swept leg.
Learn it with a coach and a partner who can breakfall, on a proper mat, and build speed only once the steps are clean.

What is the difference between harai tsurikomi ashi and sasae tsurikomi ashi?
Both lift your partner up forward around the ankle. The Kodokan's sasae tsurikomi ashi holds the ankle with your foot as a stop; harai tsurikomi ashi sweeps it away.
Is harai tsurikomi ashi legal in judo competition?
Yes. The IJF Sport and Organisation Rules score a throw only when it is a Kodokan classified technique or a recognised variation, and harai tsurikomi ashi is on the Kodokan list, so a clean harai tsurikomi ashi can score yuko, waza-ari or ippon.
In BJJ a throw counts as a takedown: 2 points under the IBJJF rules once your partner lands on the back, side or seat and you hold the top for three seconds.
